About The Shakedown

What this site is

The Shakedown publishes ranked buying guides for consumer products — kitchen appliances, audio gear, home tech, fitness equipment, outdoor kit, travel goods, and software. Each guide covers one category, ranks the products in it, and explains the reasoning behind the order.

The premise is that most categories have one obvious answer for most people, a couple of justified exceptions, and a lot of products that exist only to fill shelf space. We try to say which is which, including when the right answer is the cheap one.

How the research works

Research and draft copy are produced using Claude, an AI system built by Anthropic. It synthesizes publicly available material: manufacturer specifications, retailer listings, independent lab testing from named outlets, verified-owner feedback at scale, recall and safety notices, and price history. A human editor reviews every guide before it publishes and is accountable for what ships.

Where a guide cites test results — crisping evenness, debris pickup, battery degradation — those come from a named third party, and the guide says who. The full method is on our Editorial & AI Policy page.

What we don’t do

Being useful depends on being clear about the limits, so:

• We do not test products ourselves. No lab, no benchmarks, no measurements of our own. We weigh other people’s testing and say whose it is.
• We do not accept free samples, gifts, or press units from manufacturers or PR agencies.
• We do not invent experience. No AI-generated quotes, interviews, or first-person anecdotes. If we didn’t do a thing, we don’t claim to have done it.
• We do not sell positive verdicts. Commission is earned on purchases, never on conclusions.

How we make money
