The cordless stick vacuum has quietly replaced the upright in most homes, and the reason is behavioural rather than technical: a vacuum on a wall hook gets used four times a week, and one in a closet gets used twice a month. Suction figures matter less than whether you actually reach for the thing.
That framing is why the $149 Levoit sits third on this list, ahead of two machines that cost three times as much. It is not the best vacuum here. It is, for a lot of households, the right one.
How we pick
Cordless vacuums are well served by rigorous independent testing — RTINGS, Consumer Reports, Vacuum Wars and TechGearLab all run standardized debris pickup across hard floor, low pile and high pile carpet. We weight those results first, then adjust for two things labs measure poorly: battery degradation over years and how annoying the machine is to empty, both of which show up clearly in long-tail owner reviews.
Air watts are the honest suction number to compare; ignore any “Pa” figure quoted for a stick vacuum, since manufacturers measure it inconsistently at the motor rather than at the head.

The honest advice
If you have carpet and a budget, buy the Dyson V15 Detect. If emptying the bin is the part you hate, buy a Shark PowerDetect with the auto-empty base — the Pet Plus at $400 is the better-value of the two. If you have hard floors and a sensible attitude to money, buy the Levoit at $149 and spend the difference on something else.
